Help and advice on Tinnitus

Tinnitusguru provides Tinnitus sufferers with first hand information, tools and products to help them manage their condition

This website was developed by Tinnitus sufferer Samantha King after she recognised the need for an independent site which provided greater awareness about Tinnitus and where fellow sufferers could access first hand information on the condition and how to get help and treatment for it.

Samantha developed Tinnitus and hyperacusis (sensitivity to even moderate sound) from cumulative exposure to loud music from DJ'ing and clubbing without wearing ear protection. Developing Tinnitus was life changing for her. It put an end to any hopes of continuing to DJ professionally.

Having been diagnosed and then finding little in the way of useful help she conducted her own detailed research into the area in an attempt to find a cure for herself. She also tried and tested out many different treatments for Tinnitus some of which helped and some which didn't.  Read more about Samantha's Tinnitus story and how she manages her condition.

What most people don't realise about Tinnitus is that it is very common

Many famous people and well known DJs and musicians suffer from Tinnitus. So do a significant number of the general population.

It is estimated that seven million people in the UK have experienced Tinnitus at one time or another. Three million have visited their GP about it, and there are many more who have Tinnitus but do not know what it is or how to manage it. For at least half a million, the effect on their lives is severe. It can also happen at any age. [Source: RNID]

If you think you may have developed Tinnitus it is important that you educate yourself about the condition as soon as possible. Don't leave it or think your GP will find a cure for you. You are responsible for looking after your own ears and you will need to take action.

You may be told that there is no cure for Tinnitus

There is no miracle medical 'cure' or 'wonder drug' to cure Tinnitus currently. A significant amount of research is however being conducted to find one.

However, Tinnitus is very treatable and many people find that once they stop doing whatever was causing the Tinnitus in the first place (i.e listening to loud music or wearing headphones for long periods) that their ears settle down again and the ringing subsides.

The most important thing you must do therefore if you have Tinnitus or may be developing Tinnitus is to PROTECT YOUR EARS IMMEDIATELY. This will prevent any further damage. And of course, try and identify what is causing or has caused the Tinnitus in the first place and remove it or stop doing it.

There are also many treatments, tools and aids available to help you.
